The Branch County Community Foundation plays a pivotal role in enhancing the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness in our community. Through targeted funding initiatives, the Foundation is dedicated to creating warm, welcoming, and trauma-informed spaces that prioritize the dignity and well-being of those in need.

One of the most significant projects supported by BCCF was the renovation of the floors in the Naomi Davis Shelter, a crucial facility operated by the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

While the flooring improvement is essential for the functionality of the shelter, its deeper significance lies in the message it sends to clients. By providing a clean and well-maintained environment, the shelter fosters a sense of worth and safety for individuals navigating challenging circumstances. A welcoming atmosphere plays a vital role in helping clients feel secure as they work through their trauma, emphasizing the importance of a supportive temporary housing experience.

The BCCF’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has also made meaningful contributions to Family Promise, a shelter specifically designed to support families experiencing homelessness. Funding from the YAC facilitated a major renovation aimed at promoting family engagement and well-being.

Lori LaBundy, Executive Director of Coldwater Housing Matters, shared insights into the renovation:

“Historically, homeless shelters have been created for adults who also have children. Our renovation project has been specifically focused to include family engagement spaces that embrace the principles of trauma-informed design.”

The renovated space includes a dedicated dining room, where families can gather and enjoy meals together. Research shows that regular family meals contribute to lower rates of depression and anxiety while fostering resilience and higher self-esteem. Family Promise is committed to leveraging the benefits of these connections, believing in the power of shared meals to strengthen family bonds.

The funding also provided for essential finishing touches, including furniture and decorations, creating a warm and inviting environment for families.

The Branch County Community Foundation is committed to enhancing the lives of individuals and families, through partnering with our local shelters. By focusing on trauma-informed design and creating welcoming environments, BCCF is not just providing support to our local shelters; but also providing support as our community partners are nurturing dignity, safety, and a sense of belonging for all their clients. These initiatives not only transform physical spaces but also foster hope and resilience within the community. Together, we are building a brighter future for those in need.
